Part of the club.

We were invited to a neighborhood cookout this past weekend at our neighbors house. Since we’ve lived here now for 6.5 months it’s about time we start making some neighborhood friends and learning everyone’s name. We arrived about an hour after it officially started with beer, wine, chips and a baby in tow. I parked myself on a comfortable seat since I knew I wouldn’t be chasing around a toddler school aged kiddo. JPW did his best to introduce me while he made the rounds. As the other mom’s and dad’s made their rounds I made sure to speak up so I could start meeting some of our neighborhood folk.
While I was parked on the comfy outdoor patio couch I overheard a few of the mom’s talking about a women’s club and the obnoxious night they had on Friday. It involved lots of wine, beer and shots. Oh and dancing, they couldn’t stop talking about the dancing. Then the conversation turned to something about a “dance” class. From the tone of the conversation it sounded more like a strip tease dance class. I was interested, they had my attention. I wanted some other women to hang out with who liked to dance, drink and have a fun time away from husbands and children. So I spoke up….
And what came out of my mouth still fathoms me. ”I’d love to know more about your “Women’s Club”, I announced. What did I just say? I said Women’s Club. And why is it that I feel so shocked about those two words. BECAUSE THERE IS NO WAY I’M OLD ENOUGH TO BE PART OF A WOMEN’S CLUB. I mean I’m not old, I have a baby and well although I know technically I’m a women, it just doesn’t seem right. My age still starts with a 2, and I wear pants that I’ve had since college. The other mom’s aren’t old either, but they have kids who can tie their own shoes, eat with a fork and wipe their own asses. It felt awkward saying those two words, but kindly and enthusiastically my neighbor piped in and chimed, “Sure we’d love to have you, I’ll get you the information”. And so it begins, the emails and outings with the ::gulp:: Women’s Club. Clearly I’m too young for this, right?!? RIGHT?!

I’d love a few minutes of your precious time while you take this survey for me. If you already took it, THANK YOU!

Haha thats funny! But ya know what, I'd rather be part of the Women's Club than be with people my age and younger who don't understand family life. So Women's Club it is! Can't wait to hear more about it!

I have always wondered when I will start feeling like a "grown up". Married, mortgage, 3 kids … still dont feel like i fit in with the women crowd. For me it think it's because i am in a strange spot of older for my years in "life" {kids and married} but younger then the women who are in the same life situation … i dont know.
I hope you build some great connections with the women in your neighborhood! I think it sounds like a great time!

Yeah a mortgage will certainly make you feel like a grown up, even if you don't really want to be!

Trust me, I have this feeling ALL the time. With a seven year old, most of the parents of my son's friends are either in their LATE 30's or early 40's. My son's best friend…his mom…is my MOM's age. Mr. B & I are always cracking up saying that ppl bet we are Bubs' brother & sister. LOL

I know! I live in a small town and it's still hard to meet people or get out and do things with friends. Don't think about the term, think about meeting new people that you like and will have fun with!

That's funny! Although I'm at the other end of the spectrum and sometimes feel like the oldest, it's nice to hear a young'un's point of view too.
By the way–we call it Girls Night. Women's Club sounds like something my mother would be in.

Fancy that. A real live women's club. I'm fascinated. I like the Girl's Night suggestion of Sara though, being only 20 months from the big 4-0 myself.
I wish we had a Women's Club of sorts here to be honest. I'm a part of a few mom's groups that have mom's night out from time to time, so guess that counts, eh?

there are women's clubs? I wish I was in one…and my age starts with a 3. but the number after that 3 is pretty small. and I still get surprised at my own age. In my head I know i am "all grown up" because i have a mortgage and a marriage and a wee one and I am in my 30's…but it still seems funny to me! You must blog about these women club meetings if you go. I am now intrigued!

Seriously? A Women's Club? There is an email list? I want to know more! Sounds like a crazy bunch of ladies! I've heard of play group friends, but a women's club?

This just cracks me up! Believe me, these moments continue. My parents always said, "time flies by before you know it" and I didn't believe them. I know all too well what they meant now! I think I will always feel like a kid, but that number that represents my years since birth tells a completely different story!
